When kitchens and baths function flawlessly, they are an ongoing pleasure. Kitchens are important not only as rooms where food is prepared and cooked, but as gathering places for families and friends. Bathrooms are no longer utilitarian spaces. They are private retreats where homeowners can wash away the cares of the day.

To that end, we are paying much more attention—and devoting more dollars—to kitchens and baths. Trends include enhanced lighting, upscale finishes and layers of detail. Think pendants, recessed lights and chandeliers. Natural stone, fine woods and metals, in polished or brushed finishes. Heated floors, opulent carving and enhanced technology.
