Motivated by the surge of new full-time residents and visitors along the coast, many enterprising entrepreneurs are opening new establishments or expanding. Here are a few to check out. (Don’t see a website? Look for the business on Facebook.)
THE GIFT OF HISTORY
The Lewes Historical Society has been busy. It plans to open a new museum this summer in the old Lewes Public Library site on Kings Highway. The main campus near Shipcarpenter Square has undergone improvements, and the gift shop has moved to the Ryves Holt House on Second Street from the old Zwaanendael Club on Savannah Road. The society enlisted the help of a museum store consultant to design the space, which now features local artists’ work and gift items. Books are the shop’s bestselling items. | 302 Savannah Road, Lewes, 645-7670, www.historiclewes.org
The Ryves Holt House, part of the First State National Historic Park, is being outfitted for interpretive purposes. At one time, it was a 17th-century tavern, and it might resemble one again.
Speaking of books, the new Lewes Public Library is now open off of the Theo C. Freeman Memorial Highway (the road to the ferry terminal), though you can enter through the old library off Kings Highway. There is a roster of events, including health and wellness seminars, Spanish and French conversation groups, and book clubs, including a group for cookbooks. This was also the site of Teller Wines’ annual expo. | 111 Adams Ave., Lewes, 645-2733, www.leweslibrary.org
AROUND THE OUTLETS
There have been quite a few changes at Tanger Outlets. Frequent shoppers have noticed the facade improvements at the Surfside (formerly known as Midway Outlets). At Tanger Seaside, a new lane with direct access to the north end of the shopping center is under construction. It should be finished in October.
Tanger Seaside’s shopper services and public restrooms are being renovated and expanded. (During construction, shopper services are by American Eagle Outfitters. Restrooms are near the Calvin Klein outlet.)
Tanger Outlets’ first Tori Burch store opened in April in Surfside near Kate Spade—a win-win for shoppers since there is a clear crossover between the two brands’ customers. For the guys, Madda Fella Key West also opened in April. Adidas is scheduled to open in June.
Spaces in the Rehoboth Tanger locations are in high demand. The outlets boast a 99 percent occupancy rate. | www.tangeroutlet.com/rehoboth
