How One Outdoorsman Enjoys Passing Time at the Beach

Fishing, swimming and sailing in the Rehoboth Bay, crab cakes and crushes at Woody’s, then some some pre-dinner surfing.

Chris Bason lives in Ocean View, but his work, based at Indian River Inlet, and hobbies keep him close to Dewey Beach.

Bason loads fishing gear and his Hobie kayak on the car, then fishes for flounder in Rehoboth Bay. If it gets too hot, he’ll take a quick swim. The Hobie has a sail, so he can zip across the bay easily. If he has time, he might stop at Tower Road on the bay side to go clamming. Bason can fish for hours, but on Oct. 7, he’ll head to The Starboard for the Dewey Goes Pink 5K race and cheer on the teams. “It’s one of the best runs,” he says. “It’s so high energy, and the organizers do it so well. The food is fantastic, and it’s for a great cause.”

Bason is keen on Hammerheads Dockside, where he loves to sit outside by the marina. Crabby tots—tater tots topped with Old Bay-seasoned crab and melted provolone—are a fave. So is the Hawaiian tuna wrap with mixed greens, avocado and red onion. If he’s craving a crab cake, it’s off to Woody’s Dewey Beach. “They have the best crab cakes, and the crushes are always good,” he says.

After lunch, he’ll hike the 1.7-mile Thompson Island Trail, which meanders alongside the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal and the bay, through hardwood trees and past marsh. “It’s beautiful in fall, but both in spring and fall, it’s teeming with warblers,” says Bason. If conditions are right, he’ll take his surfboard to the north side of the inlet to catch some waves before happy hour.

For a sunset view, Bason and his wife sit at a table on the sand at the bayfront Qué Pasa in Dewey. He has never met a fish taco he didn’t like, and he appreciates the portions there. Then it’s off to The Starboard. “It’s easy to dance in there.” Did he mention that he likes crushes? Bason might then go to the Bottle & Cork. “It’s a great place to see a show,” he says. For a nightcap, it’s a slice at Mama Celeste’s.
