The Color That Suits Everyone

Share

In case you haven’t heard, this year’s color is Marsala, as declared by color trendsetter Pantone. But don’t be intimidated by the deep, wine-hued shade. Marsala is a fun, wearable color for all ages and skin tones. We chatted with three local style experts about how to rock the 2015 color.

MAKEUP

Lizzie Johnson, co-owner of Houppette, advises women to take into consideration three factors: coloring, features and the occasion. “Marsala is a strong color, so during the day you should focus on one feature, either the eyes or the lips. As you transition into the evening, you can go for a bolder look by playing up both features,” says Johnson. Johnson’s go-to marsala lip picks include Laura Mercier’s crème smooth colour lipsticks in merlot and sienna ($27 each). To make the color last longer, line and then fill lips with Laura Mercier’s redwood or deep wine lip liner ($27 each). If that’s too much, skip the lipstick and apply Laura Mercier’s Garnet Gloss for a sheerer, softer kiss of berry. Finish the look with a swipe of Terry Densiliss blush in No. 4 across the apples of the cheeks.

ACCESSORIES AND CLOTHING

“Marsala is more of a fall color, so you have to get creative when it comes to clothing,” says Cari Rogers, owner of Moxie Boutique in Newark. Bel Boutique owner Erin Thwaites suggests bringing this typically fall hue into spring by wearing it as a print, lace, crochet or even as beaded jewelry. Then pair it with shades of ivory, turquoise and cognac for an earthy, boho chic look for the warm-weather months. Bel Boutique carries an array of marsala-inspire clothing and accessories, including a Nakamol beaded necklace ($56), Nakamol beaded cuff ($44), Veronica M. Danli cocoon overthrow ($58) and a Jack Nievve tank ($35). At Moxie Boutique, marsala is featured in one of Rogers’ favorite dresses—a mixed media print from Umgee ($48). It’s a wonderful transition piece for spring and summer. Adorn it with navy and gold accessories to complete the look.
