Give a tree a hug. Grab a coffee mug.

The Pomeroy and Newark Rail Trail is a unique byway for cycling and walking that spans country and city, linking White Clay Creek State Park, the University of Delaware and Downtown Newark.

The Rail Trail is truly a trailblazer, a conduit for safe walking and other means of non-motorized transportation. It’s also a hip, healthy mode for accessing restaurants, shops and other attractions in Newark while promoting fitness and reducing traffic congestion.

Imagine, cycling through parklands directly into Newark’s lively downtown district. Take a coffee break at a local bistro. Meet with friends and browse a boutique. Get back on your bike and hit the trail.

The fully paved, lighted and accessible trail cost $4.7 million and took 10 years to develop. It opened in 2012 and is open year round for people to enjoy.

The trail follows the route of the former Pomeroy Railroad, whose tracks for freight trains were abandoned in 1939. Passenger trains stopped running in 1928. A predecessor of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the line connected Newark with Pomeroy, Pa.

These days, the Rail Trail, in connection with the east-west Hall Trail, provides better access to public transportation. The trail connects to the Newark Transit Center at Main Street, where people can travel by bus to neighboring communities.
