Delaware Beach Shopping: Galleries Like Kevin Fleming and Friends Gallery in Rehoboth, Gallery One in Ocean View, and Abraxus Hudson on Second Street in Lewes

2. The Galleries

Where there is sand, surf and magical sunsets you’ll find artists and galleries. In Rehoboth Beach, well-known photographer Kevin Fleming has opened Kevin Fleming and Friends Gallery. “My Bethany gallery did well last year, and I found a great location in Rehoboth,” Fleming says. “It just seemed a natural to have a gallery in Rehoboth Beach, too.” The 800-square-foot space also features work by Fleming’s son, Jay Fleming, Pam Bieler and Tony Pratt. He’s also showcasing glasswork by Deb Appleby. Visiting photographers and painters are on display outside. Fleming now offers prints on canvas, which are framed with aged dune fencing. “It looks great, and the prints suit beach homes,” he says. 239 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, delawareartgallery.com

The beach has several artists’ co-operatives, including Gallery One in Ocean View, which initially opened in 2005. The co-op features the work of 16 artists, as well as guests who offer complimentary work, such as jewelry artists, weavers, quilters and photographers. “We work in all different mediums: watercolor, pastels, oil, acrylic—you name it, we do it,” says Jeanne Mueller, who works in oils. Every month, the gallery has a theme. This month, it’s “Inspired by…” 32 Atlantic Ave., Ocean View, 537-5055, galleryonede.com

In Lewes, Abraxas Hudson has a studio on Second Street, where he showcases his paintings and prints. You’ll recognize many of the scenes or subjects, such as the lightship Overfalls, but there’s a fantasy-like twist to many of them. Colors are so vivid as to be otherworldly, and his use of light makes the scene incandescent.
