All it took was one eyeful of Southern Lights of Life honorary chair Patricia Key for me to know that this gala was going to be a vision indeed. I’d place my bet on Patricia, the CEO of Harrington Raceway, any day when it comes to best-dressed. She stunned in rosy pink sequins, which matched perfectly the romantic, blushing lights strung around the bars, which complemented the pops of pink on the exquisitely set tables, which went with … well, let’s just put it this way: Vicky Cooke and Co. at the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition really know how to throw a pretty party. This one, titled An Evening of Living and Giving, was held at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.

Speaking of Vicky, I found her and partner in crime Melany Sammons cutting up together. Sammons leaned into me, laughing, and said, “You want dirt? Stop by the Dover [DBCC] office. I’ve got tons of it!” I might have to take you up on that, Mel.

The party people grooved to On The Edge, featuring a spontaneous performance by Lewes’ Autumn Schneider. “I heard the song and I said to my husband, ‘That was my solo when I worked on a cruise ship!’” Schneider said. “We’ll definitely be back next year,” she said, tearing up as the band moved on to a slow ballad. “Cancer just affects too many.”

The heroines of the night—the survivors—took to the catwalk for their moment in the spotlight, modeling show-stopping numbers from boutiques from Wilmington to Dover. I was particularly taken with Betsy Holden, whose stepson, the fabulous Brad Holden, tops my list of young Delaware do-gooders, thanks to his role at The Next Generation Foundation. Brad, gushing about how proud he was of Betsy, said she was going to be beautiful coming down that runway. And was she ever, in an ivory Daymor Couture gown from Lady’s Image. And I must give serious snaps to Charlene Payne, who brought down the house in a wonderfully ruffled navy suit from Maxine’s in Dover. I had my eye on Charlene throughout the night, and she is one popular lady.
