After many years of trying, Middletown’s Christine Rich finally got the Big Tiara.

In early January, Rich was crowned Mrs. USA Earth in Orlando, Florida. “I had a mix of emotions,” Rich says. “The first was, ‘Finally! All my hard work had paid off.’ Second was that Delaware was being recognized.’”

As Mrs. USA Earth, Rich will help build awareness for oceanic conservation, along with other environmentally sustainable practices in people’s everyday lives.

A graduate of Newark High School and Goldey–Beacom College, Rich will receive her doctorate this month in higher education leadership and innovation from Wilmington University, where she’s in her third year as a professor and serves as one of the university’s Green Team leaders.

ChristianaCare’s mobile intensive care unit is the first in the U.S. to receive the Beacon Award for Excellence for the fifth consecutive three-year cycle. The award is one of the highest achievements in nursing, lauding evidence-based practices that improve outcomes.

“It is a testament to our nurses and the entire care team that we continued to reach milestones in patient safety and satisfaction even during the COVID-19 pandemic,” says nurse manager Carol Ritter, MSN, RN, CCRN-K, CNML, who led the unit in all Beacon wins. “Everyone brings a level of expertise… we truly serve together.”
