On Nov. 14, 1963, President John F. Kennedy stood with Delaware Gov. Elbert Carvel (to his right) and others to dedicate the opening of I-95. “There were many onlookers who were probably so glad they’d made the effort to be a part of this,” says Ellen Rendle of the Delaware Historical Society. “What a happy day this was, filled with thoughts of the future.” The president was assassinated eight days later.
