After last year’s removal of the Dolle’s sign from the boardwalk, the Rehoboth Beach History Museum stepped in to provide it a new home.

People all over Delaware vividly remember the departure of the iconic Dolle’s sign from the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk. For many, it represented the end of an era in Rehoboth. The sign became a staple as people remembered their first visit to the beach. For those growing up in the charming coastal town, it was the backdrop for many childhood memories.

Luckily, the sense of community in Rehoboth Beach runs deep. The people quickly stepped in to preserve this piece of history and culture. Thanks to their efforts, the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society can reinstall the sign on the western side of the Rehoboth Beach History Museum.

“The Dolle’s sign is an iconic symbol of Rehoboth Beach,” says Nancy Alexander, director of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society. “The historical society is grateful to Tom Ibach for donating it to the society. We are also grateful to the City of Rehoboth Beach for cooperating with us in having the sign mounted on the museum building.”

The museum will host a brief ceremony on Wednesday, June 29 at 3:30 p.m. The museum invites the public to welcome the sign to its new home in Rehoboth.

If you visit the museum to see the Dolle’s sign, step inside to see other historic signs in the museum’s collection, which include Nicola Pizza as well as signs from Gus & Gus, the Miss Delaware Pageant and the former Front Page restaurant, among others.

“The Dolle’s sign has been a Rehoboth Beach icon for decades,” says Mayor Stan Mills. “And while change may be inevitable, it will be wonderful to have an old, familiar friend welcoming people as they enter Rehoboth Beach. I’m so pleased that the Rehoboth Beach History Museum stepped up to preserve this rather large piece of Rehoboth-cana and has found a highly visible, distinctive way to display the sign.”

More than 250 donors contributed over $35,000 to these efforts. Thanks to their help, the Dolle’s sign can be enjoyed at its new home for decades to come.
