easySpeak Spirits Is a Welcome Addition to Southern Delaware

The Milford brewpub-slash-distillery boasts Prohibition-themed decor, limited-edition spirits and a wood-fired oven.

Until recently, the bulk of the beer- and spirit-centric spots in southern Delaware have been clustered close to the coast.

That changed with the December 2017 opening of easySpeak in Milford, which marries three trendsetting concepts under one roof. Owned by Zack King and Marissa Cordell, easySpeak boasts a brewery, a distillery and a wood-fired oven.

“We chose Milford because we love the little town,” Cordell says. There was also a practical side to the site, which is not far from Route 1 and not congested in summer. “It’s much better for distribution purposes,” she adds.

Given King was once an owner of Delaware Distilling Company in Rehoboth, it’s not surprising that spirits are a star of the show. Even the decor, which Cordell selected, salutes the Prohibition era, when speakeasies ruled and bathtub gin kept parties going strong.

The American Mule Vodka has been a bestseller, Cordell says. The bourbon and spiced rum are also popular. The limited releases, meanwhile, don’t lack for creativity: Consider Tom Brady’s Tears, vodka shooters in a shade of Philadelphia Eagles green made with easySpeak’s citrus-infused vodka.

As for the food, the meat-lovers’ pizza with smoked sausage, pepperoni and bacon is a customer favorite, Cordell says. (And, if you’re really hungry, kick off your meal with the bourbon-honey wings.)
