Finally Swinging into Golf Season

After one of the longest winters on record, it’s time to hit the links.

Before this winter, I thought a polar vortex was a ride at an amusement park.

Some ride … Not amusing.

That’s why our cover feature is about cheating Old Man Winter—pointing our compass south and heading for warmth, comfort and good, old-fashioned golf hospitality. In this case, “south” is as much a state of mind as it is a direction or part of the country.

Even with the promise of another golf season shining bright, the keepers of the game are worried enough about the sport to launch a new, collective effort to improve and grow the game, in hopes of making it more fun for everyone. The Hack Golf initiative, unveiled at this year’s PGA Merchandise Show, provides a place for all of us to put our heads together and
share ideas, with the common goal of bettering the sport we love. The open-source platform has the backing of many of the game’s top manufacturers, thought leaders, and industry pundits.

We asked local experts what they’d do to help the game. Naturally, we received great feedback—some simple, some widely professed, some outright brilliant. (Have some great ideas yourself? Share them with us in our “What’s Your Hack?” contest on page G19, and we’ll be good to you with some new golf gear for your good thoughts).

Lastly, like spring training in baseball and the promise of an opening day where everyone has a chance for greatness, golfers start over once again to chase their dreams of improving play. Among the myriad golfisms that abound, surely one of the truest
is “drive for show, putt for dough.” Area golf pros offer tips to help you improve the latter—the most critical element of everyone’s game and probably the single most important way to shave strokes off your score.

These features-—plus new gear, great equipment and training aids; the latest technology, fashion and footwear; what the pros eat; our comprehensive list of area courses; and more—await inside our annual Golf Guide.

See you in the fairway.
