Quite a To-’Do

Having a bad hair day was nearly impossible at the Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover on April 10. The museum hosted its first Hair Affair, where stylists from some of Delaware’s most celebrated salons—Rehoboth’s Made Ya Look!, Dover’s
MichaelAngelo’s Hair Designs, The Upper Cut, Rene Delyn Designs and William Boyd Company, and Wilmington’s Salon Pasca—styled models head-to-toe for a diva-off. Dover’s Elisa Fermin brought the heat in the “fantasy couture” category. Fermin, repping MichaelAngelo’s and styled by India Lott and Stephanie Simmons (whom Gabby must applaud for her outfit: spring must-have nude pumps, a belted khaki shirt dress jazzed up with a pop of sparkle and a near-perfect asymmetrical ’do with razor bangs), rocked an out-of-control butterfly hairstyle. “Everything on that was hair,” said MichaelAngelo Williams, salon owner. “We wanted to capture the idea that it was springtime. The caterpillar is shaking off the winter and coming out as a butterfly for the new season.” Believe Gabby when she says Fermin owned it. Salon Pasca walked away the big winner, with a Natasha Latina-designed outrageous little number (Color! See-through! Strings! Rosettes!) worn by Alexis DiFonzo. In the “modern day life” category, Dover’s adorable Brittany Dempsey, former Miss Delaware, stole the show when she bounced down the runway wearing a wedding gown and sporting a curly, beflowered up-do. Gabby caught up with Caitlin White, who modeled The Upper Cut’s whimsical wedding-cake design. “It felt like it was 50 pounds,” White said, rubbing the red marks on her forehead. “I was so afraid I was going to fall!” In the auction room, Nicole Chudzinski of Bel Boutique was handing out samples of Hollywood Fashion Tape. Tiger Lili owner Lili Kohr wondered if that’s how Jennifer Lopez kept that green Versace dress on at the 2000 Grammy Awards. “Whatever it was, it was a miracle,” Kohr said. “Although nothing beats Spanx.” And here Gabby paused to ponder on what planet does a woman who looks like Kohr even need to know how to spell Spanx. Not on this one, people.
