But when she needs a haircut or other grooming services, she heads to Salon 828. “I think it’s Wilmington’s best-kept secret,” she says. “What I like is that it’s always busy, has the newest products and latest trends and is still relaxed and down-to-earth.” The salon offers an array of indulgences—from manicures to makeup to nails. “I’m a busy mom and have a hard time finding time for myself,” McLean says. “When I go there, it’s a nice experience.”

Brode is a big supporter of independent Kent County businesses, admitting, “I very much go for the little people.” For haircuts, she likes the atmosphere at J La Salon in Dover. “It’s very trendy and very young,” she says. “And they are very accommodating to my crazy schedule.” She also manages to squeeze in mani-pedis at Suncco Salon in Harrington. “They offer different kinds of pedicures,” she says. The hot-stone treatment is one of her favorites. To relax, Brode swears by the massages at It’s All About You Salon & Bodyworks in Smyrna.

Zerby, a Lewes resident, has an easy-going style. When she does need a hair trim, she is fortunate to have a sister, Meredith Palmer, who is a traveling barber in Sussex County. But that doesn’t mean Rehoboth doesn’t have terrific salons, where you can settle in for haircuts and soothing treatments. “Around here, everybody goes to Bad Hair Day,” Zerby says. “They do everything there.” She also suggests Made Ya Look! Salon & Day Spa, adding, “It’s also a great place.”
