Meet Emily Zollingger and Ann Ahl, Founders of nfuse deodorant

What inspired you to make your product?

Ann and I are sisters and friends and have always loved working together. Ann has a background in journalism and marketing and I have a background in business development. Ann’s husband has always talked about the benefits of magnesium, and we have always been very health-conscious. We both went to Duke University and Emily has a background from Wharton Business School, so we started researching the benefits of magnesium. We discovered that many Americans have diets deficient in magnesium. We wanted to create a simple way for people to add it to their lives. We learned in South America the people use milk of magnesia as a deodorant, so we figured we would make our own deodorant enriched in magnesium. We launched nfuse deodorant in June of 2016. Emily is very business-oriented and I have a knack for marketing; our skills really complement each other.

What are some of the benefits of magnesium?

Magnesium helps you sleep, calm your nerves and it relaxes your muscles. It boosts energy and protects the body from harmful toxins. It also helps neutralize acids found in sweat and creates an environment where odor-causing bacteria cannot grow. Magnesium is stored in your tissue not in your blood and is best absorbed through the skin, making nfuse deodorant especially effective.

Besides magnesium, what else makes your product different?

Our deodorant is all natural, vegan, gluten-free and cruelty-free. It does not contain aluminum, an element commonly found in antiperspirants that has been linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

But does it work?

Yes! It is not an antiperspirant so you will still sweat. The longer you use it the better it will work. You can also put it on as much as you want.

What scents are available?

There are four scents, each with its own different essential oils and benefits. Citrus is antiseptic and refreshing; Lavender is antibacterial and has soothing properties of fragrant lavender essential oil; Rosemary Mint is antimicrobial and has revitalizing properties of herbaceous rosemary and peppermint; and Unscented, which is fragrance-free and gentle on sensitive skin. Each bottle is $9.95.

Where is it sold?

It is available in multiple locations in Delaware and Pennsylvania, including Houppette, Hockessin Athletic Club, Janssen’s Market, Currie Hair, Skin and Nails and Salon Secrets. Many local yoga and barre studios are selling it, too. We have a huge following in Connecticut, and it’s available in stores across the United States.

What have you enjoyed most about creating this product?

It’s so gratifying that we have created a product for people going through something [like breast cancer] that they are going to enjoy using. We also hope women will start to become more aware of what’s in their products. You cannot assume just because something is sold in the store that it is safe.
