Bayhealth was formed in January 1997 when Kent General Hospital, founded in 1927, and Milford Memorial Hospital, founded in 1938, merged to create a not-for-profit health-care system. It includes both hospitals, Middletown Medical Center, a freestanding Emergency Center in Smyrna and numerous satellite facilities, staffed by more than 3,200 employees and 425 physicians. It is an affiliate of Penn Medicine for heart and vascular, cancer and orthopedic care. In 2013, Bayhealth was named a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware, and Bayhealth Kent General received a “Get With the Guidelines” Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association for Resuscitation and a Gold Plus quality Achievement Award for heart failure. In the 2013 fiscal year, Bayhealth recorded 90,142 emergency-department visits, 18,078 patients admitted to beds and 2,266 births. Last year, Bayhealth provided approximately $44.5 million in unreimbursed care to patients. Bayhealth Kent General Hospital offers an array of services, including cardiac surgery and diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations, brain and spine care, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, family-centered birth services and neonatal care, cancer care and clinical trials, orthopedic and rehabilitation services, advanced digital imaging, inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical care, intensive, intermediate and coronary care, and a 24-hour emergency department.

In 2011, Bayhealth Kent General opened a 35,000-square-foot integrated cancer center and a new ER with 39 treatment bays. The hospital offers IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) for certain cancers, advanced image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery, and clinical trials. Orthopedic and rehabilitative services include the latest surgical approaches for joint replacement—such as anterior hip surgery—and minimally invasive methods to repair sports-related injuries. Physical, occupational, speech and aquatic-therapy services are available on an outpatient and home-service basis. For obstetric and newborn care, the hospital offers private rooms and care for high-risk deliveries and premature infants. It also provides sleep-disorder evaluation, respiratory care, wound care and more. The construction of a 32-bed, intermediate-care unit with all private rooms is expected to be ready in 2015.Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital offers services that include diagnostic imaging, family-centered birth services, cancer care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical care, and a 24-hour emergency department. Its Total Joint Center provides specialized orthopedic care for patients recovering from joint-replacement surgeries. The Inpatient Rehabilitation Center has a comprehensive therapy program for those impaired by stroke, neurological disorders, accidents, arthritis and other disabling impairments, offering physical and occupational therapy, speech pathology and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. The center, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, received the W.L. (Bill) Gore Award of Excellence. The hospital’s 12,000-square-foot cancer center provides radiation therapy and chemotherapy services as well as clinical trials. Other services include a state-of-the-art maternity care, diagnostic imaging, a sleep-disorders center and fitness center. A new hospital facility is being planned with state-of-the-art inpatient and ambulatory-care capabilities.

Beebe Healthcare offers an array of inpatient, outpatient, emergency and diagnostic services. Founded in 1916 by two physician brothers, Drs. James Beebe and Richard C. Beebe, the medical center in Lewes is a 210-bed, licensed, not-for-profit community hospital. Beebe’s specialized services include cardiovascular, oncology, women’s health and orthopedics. Beebe Healthcare offers multiple health evaluations and educational events each year, including cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and other free and reduced-cost screenings. Its Department of Integrative Health offers relaxation and life-enhancement programs to help people cope with stress and improve overall health. Beebe also partners with the YMCA, American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association to offer programs and raise money for research. Beebe was a recipient of the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, and, in 2013, was ranked in the top 5 percent in the nation for overall clinical excellence by Healthgrades. It was named one of Healthgrades’ 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery for four years in a row (2012-15) and was a Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Heart Attack for two years in a row (2014-15).Beebe is an accredited Advanced Primary Stroke Center, meaning it provides a nationally recognized standard of care. Christiana Care Health System is one of the country’s largest health-care providers, ranking 21st in the nation for hospital admissions. Wilmington VA Hospital

President Harry S. Truman approved the establishment of a Wilmington Veterans Administration Hospital in 1946. Construction was completed in 1950, making the Wilmington VAMC the ninth VA hospital to open after World War II. Since its inception, the Wilmington VAMC’s mission is providing quality health services to veterans and as a health-care teaching entity. The organization is also known as the VA Delaware and Southern New Jersey Healthcare System, recognizing its far-reaching geographic and clinical efforts and responsibilities. The Wilmington Delaware campus consists of the 60-bed Medical Center, a 60-bed Community Living Center and a Veterans Benefits Administration facility. The organization also operates five community-based outpatient clinics serving southern Delaware and southern New Jersey. More than 22,000 veterans are treated at the facility and account for more than 150,000 outpatient visits. The center is a Clinical Referral Level 2 complexity facility, providing a full range of clinical services with state-of-the-art technology. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary and long-term care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Wilmington VAMC is a part of a regional network of nine Veterans Affairs facilities in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The Wilmington VA reaches out to military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan to help them make a transition to veterans’ health care via the Post Deployment Health Risk Assessment program. VA outreach efforts also include letters and phone calls to recently discharged servicemen and women. Services include outpatient substance abuse and mental-health care, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and intensive case management. Wilmington also works with the Vet Center, offering readjustment services to veterans, focusing primarily on military trauma and family-issues counseling. Wilmington maintains medical affiliations with top medical schools, supporting the VA’s educational mission. Major medical affiliations are maintained with the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and the University of Maryland. Allied affiliations support programs in nursing, dental technology, dietetics, social work and pharmacy. More than 200 medical residents receive part of their training at this facility every year. The facility maintains its accreditation by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Nanticoke Memorial Hospital has been named one of the Best 150 Places to Work in Healthcare by Becker’s Hospital Review for four years in a row. It has a Level III trauma status and includes an expanding interventional cardiology program. Nanticoke Memorial has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2014. Nanticoke is nationally certified by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations as a Primary Stroke Center and is a Gold Plus Award performer, according to the American Heart/American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines.
