1. Choose the Party’s Vibe

“I love a theme party,” says Golt, “any excuse to get dressed up or put together an outfit!”

Even if you’re not into setting a hard “theme,” Golt recommends choosing a general vibe. Think: garden party, Hawaiian night or country barbecue. The vibe will set the stage for how you decorate, what food and drinks you serve, which playlist you choose and how you pick your colors.

2. Control the Bugs

According to Golt, nothing kills the mood of an outdoor party like unwanted pests. Make sure to treat the space before the event and stockpile citronella candles and mosquito repellent, just in case. You don’t want guests asking for Benadryl on their way out the door.

3. Gift Useful Party Favors

“Guests love a favor, and a hostess loves less clean-up,” Golt explains, “so think about gifting an item that can be used during the party and taken home later.”

She recommends a cocktail glass they can refill, sunscreen or a mini s’mores kit. Other ideas include themed bottle openers or small plant centerpieces, which you can grab online or at local shops like Trolley Square Market.

4. Don’t Forget Entertainment

Finally, Golt recommends being intentional with the entertainment. “Set up an outdoor movie area, create a dance floor, put out yard games, have a throwback to college flip-cup table—it’s a great way to encourage guests to get up, chat and continue the fun,” she says.
