How to Beat Meter Season at the Delaware Beaches

Steer clear of parking fees and other transit nightmares this summer.

 

It’s the time of year when parking at the beach becomes a game of musical cars. The meters are already up in downtown Lewes, and more are on the way in the other resort towns.

If you haven’t already, download ParkMobile. And while you’re at it, download the DelDot app—the Beach Bus is a stress-free way to get around. Meter and permit-only schedules are as follows:

Lewes
May 1-Oct. 14 in the historic business district and in the 1812 municipal lot.
May 1-Sept. 30 in the Lewes Beach lot, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Rehoboth
May 25-Sep. 16 at meters from 10 a.m.-midnight.
May 25-Labor Day non-metered areas in the city require a parking permit from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dewey Beach
May 15-Sept. 15 for meters and permit-only parking in non-metered areas, from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Bethany Beach
May 15-Sept. 15 for public parking spaces and pay-to-park locations

Fenwick Island
May 15-Sept. 15 for parking-permit streets within the town limits.

As an alternative, consider the DART Beach Bus, which operates May 21-Sept. 9. (Routes 201 and 204 operate year-round.)

The Lewes Transit Center, which opened last year, has a new shelter, and a visitors’ centers should open this summer. The schedule is as follows:

201 Red Line: Lewes Transit Center to the Rehoboth Park and Ride and the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, every 10 to 30 minutes, 5:30 a.m.-2 a.m.
203 Orange Line: Lewes Transit Center to Dewey Beach, every 30 minutes, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.
204 Yellow Line: Lewes Transit Center to downtown Lewes and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal, every 30 minutes, 7 a.m.-2 a.m.
206 Green Line: Lewes Transit Center to Georgetown, 10 weekday trips, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven weekend trips, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
208 Blue Line: Rehoboth Park and Ride to Ocean City, Maryland, hourly on weekends; every two hours, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.
215 Purple Line: Rehoboth Park and Ride to Long Neck, Massey’s Landing and Millsboro, 10 trips, 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Bus 305: To Lewes and Rehoboth Park and Ride, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, from the Wilmington Train Station, Christiana Mall Park and Ride, Odessa Park and Ride at routes 1 and 299 in Middletown, Scarborough Road Park and Ride in Dover, Lewes Transit Center and Rehoboth Park and Ride. The fee is $2 per zone or buy a daily pass for $12.60.

The daily pass can be used on any beach bus. Local routes operate daily May 21 from about 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. for $2 per trip or $4.20 for a daily pass.

There is free parking at the Lewes Transit Center (pay the fare upon boarding). The fee for parking in the Rehoboth Park and Ride is $10 per car. Up to four people receive a daily bus pass.
