Indigo Gruswitz Dishes on Retro Goth Style in Arden

Arden resident Indigo Gruswitz, 15, draws from the past to display a contemporary style.

Define your style:

Gothic ’90s streetwear paired with crazy makeup.

Prized possession:

My “#1 Dad” T-shirt. I got it at Goodwill and I wear it all the time. I love ironic shirts.

Versatile staple:

My T-shirts. You can really style them for lots of different occasions, and there are so many styles and designs.

All about the bags:

I have a small collection of handbags in my closet. I don’t take them anywhere regularly or anything, but it’s cool that I have them.

Signature accessory:

I love silver jewelry, especially rings. I love grunge/Goth looks, and silver really works with that.

Favorite fashion era:

I love the ’80s and ’90s. I’ve always loved the ’80s because of the hair, makeup and bright colors. I’ve gotten into ’90s style recently, mostly because it’s trending, and I’m seeing more of it.

Style icon:

Definitely David Bowie. He had so many amazing looks and was such an amazing person.

Treasure hunting:

I love thrift shopping, and there’s a Goodwill near my house. I also love the Salvation Army in Wilmington. And, of course, any Hot Topic [a retail chain specializing in counterculture-related clothing and accessories].

Hair un-do:

I had a really bad mullet. …It did grow out and looked a lot better.

Must-have makeup:

I love e.l.f. because it’s just so affordable and good quality.

Never leave home without:

Rings or a necklace—my outfits look so empty without them.

School style vs. leisure wear:

I do as much as I can for school; I make sure to have a different look every day. It’s hard but also fun. In terms of going out, I care a bit more and accessorize more, but it’s pretty similar to school. When I’m at home, I really couldn’t care less. I’m just focused on being comfortable.

If money were no object:

I need more shoes, but the ones that I like are hard to find and very expensive. I wear the same shoes every day, but they’re pretty plain. I think it would be really cool to experiment with more statement shoes.

Concert clothes:

A worn shirt, lots of jewelry and my statement platform [shoes].

A well-dressed person is:

Someone who cares a lot about how they look and pays attention to detail and style.
