Jenny Capano has always had a fashion affinity. “I was constantly in trouble for breaking the school dress code,” recalls the Archmere Academy grad, who now resides in Brooklyn, New York, with husband Joe (son of Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki) and their two daughters, Tallulah, 5, and June, 3.
She studied costume design and business management at the University of Miami, moving on to intern at 3.1 Phillip Lim in Manhattan before becoming the global sales and special project director at the Japanese brand Sacai, known for its playful designs in oversized, asymmetrical and architectural silhouettes. Whether trotting the globe for runway shows, meeting with merchandising clients or on a casual outing with her family, Jenny is always playfully dressed. Here, she talks about personal style.
Delaware Today: Who is the Sacai client?
Jenny Capano: She’s a mother, a friend, a daughter. She appreciates art and has an eye for quality, and is not afraid to wear something bold.
DT: Your own style, in two words:
JC: Forward and playful.
DT: What does style mean to you?
JC: Style is a playful expression of oneself. You feel inspired and show that. Style helps you walk into a room and feel confident.
DT: Favorite fashion find?
JC: A leather jumpsuit I found at a vintage store in Paris.
DT: Do you have a fashion mantra?
JC: Be bold. Have fun.

DT: What’s your signature accessory?
JC: I always go for statement jewelry—I love earrings from Lizzie Fortunato.
DT: Who do you dress for each morning?
JC: Myself and my daughters. Every time I want to go casual, they tell me to put on a dress.
DT: What’s a winter trend you’re loving?
JC: I have seen a lot of tonal head-to-toe looks—and I’m into it.
DT: And one you wouldn’t touch?
JC: Never say never.
DT: What are three items every person should have in their wardrobe?
JC: A white button-down shirt, a trench coat and a perfect blue jean.

DT: What inspires your sense of fashion?
JC: A little of everything, but travel and art, mostly. When traveling, I’m inspired by different people and landscapes. With art, unique color palettes catch my attention.
DT: If you could have dinner with any style icon, who would it be?
JC: David Bowie! He’s the ultimate style icon.
DT: What’s your advice for looking effortlessly polished?
JC: Wear a really nice outerwear piece, even if you have pajamas underneath.
DT: Top shops?
JC: I shop mostly when I travel, because I’m out of my element and want to bring something home to remember the trip. At home, I love to pop into Trudy in Wilmington and Kirna Zabête in NYC.
