Pat Ciarrocchi
I wanted to thank you for the profile of CBS 3 anchor Pat Ciarrocchi in the (April) issue of Delaware Today. It was especially meaningful for Pat because of her roots in the broadcasting community there. I also felt that your reporter, Theresa Medoff, captured Pat’s “essence” better than any reporter who has profiled her in her 30 plus years at the station. I’ve known Pat since her first day at the station, and I was pleasantly surprised that not only did Theresa get it right when it came to Pat’s professional persona, but the Pat Ciarrocchi you meet on the pages of Delaware Today is who she is as a co-worker and friend. Loved the article on the top nurses (May 2013)! Libby Thomas is my favorite, and I have had the pleasure of working with her on many projects. I wish you had included Edith P. Vincent. She was the original mentor and teacher of Delaware school nurses and the reason we have a nurse in every school. Janet Ray, Milton
Great Places to Live
As legislators of Kent County, we want to take this moment to express our disappointment in a comment made in Delaware Today’s March 2013 issue. While describing Magnolia as “one of the best places to live in Delaware in 2013,” your magazine stated that Pinehurst is located in the “less-desirable Lake Forest district.” This offensive editorial comment belittles the families, students, teachers, administrators and staff who make up the Lake Forest School District. Surely you would not appreciate your magazine being called “less-desirable” when compared to another publication. While we understand that the intent of this article was to inform readers, this subjective remark only serves to propagate a negative image that disrespects the Lake Forest community. In 2012, 100 percent of Lake Forest schools met the Adequate Yearly Progress for the state of Delaware. Furthermore, Vision 2015 released a list of schools that have a higher than average level of low income students, yet also have a higher than state average student performance on the state test. Four out of 24 schools were Lake Forest schools (roughly two-thirds of the district). Lastly, in recent years, all of (its)Title I schools have been positively recognized, and two of them are National Distinguished Title I schools due to their high student performance. These are just a few examples of how the Lake Forest School District is far from being “less-desirable.” The mission of this magazine should be to highlight how people can get the most out of living in Delaware. Instead, you have written damaging and demeaning opinions of an area that you must know very little about. How do you think the residents of Pinehurst would feel if they saw your opinion of their community? This article was insulting and completely uncalled for.
