Lewes’ Rose & Crown Reopens as a Town-Favorite British-Style Pub

In a year that saw the resurrection of several popular restaurants, add The Rose & Crown in Lewes. The closing of the British-style pub a few years ago was a great loss to devotees. With the recent vacancy of Beseme in the Hotel Rodney down the street, the owners and local restaurateur Jay Caputo saw a great opportunity to renew a classic. Caputo gave the space, already updated, a few tweaks by exposing old brick walls and trimming with wood reclaimed from an old church in Philadelphia. Modern fabrics and lighting finished the look. The menu offers Brit faves like shepherd’s pie, but Caputo, ever the innovator, created a menu staple made of duck confit, dried cherries and charred carrots. It’s the kind of fare that has made Caputo’s Espuma Restaurant and the newer Cabo Modern Mexican & Tequila Bar in Rehoboth so popular. Check out the five onion soup with roasted peppers, olives and Gruyère, as well the bacon burger—the bacon is ground into the beef. And like all Caputo creations, everything is made from scratch. With an enthusiastic reception from the locals, the new R&C seems destined for greatness. (827-4475, roseandcrownlewes.com)
