Actor Lyman Chen Dishes on His L.A. Casual Style

The "Mr. Robot" actor favors comfy golf clothes—until he steps in front of the camera.

Your style:

Extreme comfort to the point of being boring. Super L.A. casual—T-shirt and jeans, but I’m starting to feel like I’m aging out of that.

Favorite character’s clothes:

On “Mr. Robot,” I played Xun, a sadistic henchman for the Dark Army. The clothes were so cool—crazy Rocawear tracksuits. They were a 180-degree turn from what I would ever wear, and I truly felt like a different person. Every time I’m working on set, the wardrobe people pick out stuff that I would never in a million years consider choosing for myself. But, of course, it ends up looking awesome on me. I wish they were with me all the time! Some wardrobe people had been using Color Guru to help select my clothing colors. I discovered that I look awesome in purple. It’s a really cool site, and it’s great for helping you figure out what looks good on you.

Blast from the past:

I did a period piece show a while back, and they put me in a Members Only jacket. This brought back a flood of ’80s memories. I had begged my parents to buy me one so I wouldn’t be a loser at Newark High School.

Must-keep item:

76ers T-shirts—I feel it’s bad luck if I get rid of them.

You never leave home before:

I have a full set of golf attire in the car in case I free up and want to sneak in a round.

Work vs. play:

My golf attire works for both extremely well.

Oldest item in your closet:

My Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity sweatshirt from when I was at the University of Delaware. I got it as a gift when I was initiated at 18 years old. My son is a brother now, so he steals it from time to time.

If money was no object:

I’d buy crazy fancy Canali [men’s Italian] suits from Boyds Philadelphia.

LBS (Little Blue Suit):

My blue Canali suit is my go-to outfit if I ever need to look fancy. I clean up nicely in a suit or tux.

Signature accessory:

I only wear my Breitling Bentley watch.

Favorite designer or brand:

I’ve fallen in love with TravisMathew clothing. It’s so cozy and fits extremely well.

Coveted TV character’s clothes:

Harvey Specter in “Suits.”

Shoe sense:

My feet are wide, so shoes are extremely annoying. It’s difficult to find ones that don’t kill my soul. I have found that HOKA extra-wide shoes are my savior. You will see me wearing flip-flops as long as possible before I lace up a pair of shoes.
