By Meg Ryan
The Wilmington native and former Miss Delaware State University will co-host the show on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Delawareans may see a familiar face during the MTV Video Music Awards this weekend.
On Sunday, Aug. 30, Jamila Mustafa will co-host the awards pre-show beginning at 6:30 p.m. Mustafa is a Delaware native and Delaware State University alumna.
The former Miss DSU is an award-winning broadcast journalist, actress and host. She’s hosted a variety of music shows on iHeartRadio, ESPN, BET Networks, SiriusXM Volume and MTV Network’s TRL. Currently, Mustafa is a host of MTV’s Fresh Out Live and Fresh Out Playlist.
MTV’s Mustafa and Nessa Diab will host the 90-minute pre-show event, featuring performances, celebrity interviews, and coast-to-coast coverage of artists and celebrities, courtesy of special correspondents Kevan Kenney and Travis Mills, according to the network.
Mustafa is excited to bring the pre-show to audiences. She says when it comes to the VMAs, the pre-show is known as “the show.”
“From performances, awards and magic moments, you never know what’s in store,” she said via email. “To be an HBCU queen from Wilmington, Delaware, who’s dedicated over 15 years professionally to my career it feels good to finally have this moment. However, Sunday isn’t about me—it’s about the millions of people I am going to bring joy to as well as the young girls watching that will say, ‘If Jamila can do it…I can do it too!’”
Musical performances by Chloe x Halle, Jack Harlow, Lewis Capaldi, Tate McRae, and Machine Gun Kelly featuring Travis Barker and Blackbear will occur during the pre-show.
The 2020 VMAs will air live at 8 p.m. on Aug. 30 on MTV, and will feature performances from Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, BTS, The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat, DaBaby, Maluma, CNCO and The Black Eyed Peas. Actress and singer Keke Palmer will host the main event.
