Bullough never thought she’d work in academia. Growing up with dyslexia made the classroom setting tough and meant she required instruction that other students didn’t need.
But Bullough was determined. Instead of settling for less, she aimed for more. Her dyslexia, she says, “ended up being a real asset.” Bullough learned to use the tools she needed to comprehend the content in her undergraduate and graduate courses, and today, she’s helping students work their way toward their degrees.
At the University of Delaware, Bullough is an associate professor of management who specializes in global leadership, as well as the co-director of the Women’s Leadership Initiative at the UD Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics. Working with male and female students, Bullough has seen changes in gender equality since she was an undergraduate.
She still sees high ratios of men in certain majors, pay inequality and a lack of female leadership in the workplace, but she also sees continuing improvement. When Bullough works with students, she tells them their “options are endless,” and watching them go off into the workforce is a great reward. “I get to have a small role in building the world’s future leaders,” she says.
