Thierry and Nathalie Langer of Lewes are living the American dream. Never mind that they’re recent transplants from France. They’ve since become entrepreneurs, opening Kaisy’s Delights in Rehoboth Beach in May. The shop (First Street Station, 70 Rehoboth Ave., 212-5360, www.kaisysdelights.com) specializes in an Austrian specialty called Kaiserschmarrn, which is “basically a fluffy, shredded pancake with vanilla extract, rum and raisins,” Thierry Langer says. The couple shortened the name of the pastry to Kaisy for obvious pronunciation reasons. “We were looking for a project in America,” Langer says. When he and his wife couldn’t find Kaiserschmarrn in the United States, they realized they had found their business. “We decided to introduce Kaiserschmarrn to America.” But could they re-create the pancake? “We said, ‘Let’s see if we can make it,” Langer recalls. “And we could.’” To get customers to try the dish, they offer free samples in the store and outside to passersby. “The more people who accept a sample, the more addicted clients they will become,” Langer predicts with a laugh. A Kaisy can be eaten for breakfast with sausage, bacon and fresh fruit, or as a dessert with powdered sugar, homemade marmalade and other toppings. The adorable store, open year-round, is decorated like a pink chalet, and the staff wears Alpine hats and shirts. “We wanted to create an Austrian vibe,” Langer says. The Langers seem to have found a niche in their new country. They are already planning to open a Kaisy’s Delights in Lewes next year.
