This Bethany Beach Couple Had the Most Enchanting Delaware Wedding

Photographs by Maria DeForrest

With a ceremony at St. Edmond Catholic Church in Rehoboth and a natural, rustic reception, the event was a dream come true.

Emily Ruppert and Colby Dean of Bethany Beach became an item after they met through mutual friends around Thanksgiving 2015. They’d each discover they’d found “the one,” albeit at different times. “I knew it was Colby when he first told me he loved me,” Emily recalls. “It was after our first day trip together—we went to Baltimore to the National Aquarium and then see an Orioles game.” For Colby, it was after another first. “We went hunting, and I realized I’d found the person I wanted to do all of my favorite things with,” he says. Colby, a soldier in the U.S. Army formerly stationed in Columbus, Georgia, proposed one weekend while Emily was visiting. “We were staying near the Chattahoochee RiverWalk,” Emily remembers vividly. “It was late at night and I had just gotten in, and he asked me to take a walk.” Along the water’s edge, Colby got down on one knee and asked Emily the very question she’d hoped he would. The couple planned a wedding celebration for Aug. 22, 2020, with 120 guests. The ceremony took place at St. Edmond Catholic Church in Rehoboth; a “natural, rustic” reception—white, budding flowers, floating candles and greenery draped in every direction, plus custom-made face masks and koozies featuring a photo of the couple’s pup—followed at the Covered Bridge Inn in Lewes. “The most special moment of the day,” Emily reflects, “had to be at the moment we said, ‘I do.’” But pandemic or not, the rest of the evening was a blast, too.
