Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Delaware (RMHCD) in Wilmington needs volunteers to provide comfort to families of children undergoing treatment at local hospitals.
The Delaware chapter of the national charity has been in a “rebuilding phase” since the COVID-19 pandemic, and getting community members to commit to regular volunteer shifts has been a challenge, especially on weekends, says RMHCD’s volunteer manager, Sara Funaiock.
No special qualifications are required to volunteer, “just a willingness to help serve families who are having a challenging time with children going through medical care,” she says. Tasks include everything anything from making someone a cup of coffee to delivering food to driving families from place to place. Others include organizing, event-planning and fundraising.
In addition to the Ronald McDonald House itself, offsite “family rooms”—at local healthcare facilities, such as Nemours Children’s Hospital and the Center for Women’s & Children’s Health at ChristianaCare in Newark—also need help.
While the house is reserved for families who live 25 or more miles from a hospital, the family rooms cater to those who live nearer but still want to remain close to their children undergoing treatment. They offer everything from complimentary snacks to laundry services.
