Many people run to stay in shape—and oftentimes, to stay warm. For those who do not own a winter coat, keeping warm in the cold weather is a daily challenge.
On Sunday, Oct. 23, Dave McGillivray, the 30-year director of the Boston Athletic Association’s Boston Marathon, directed Run Inspired, a new 10K race to support Chadds Ford-based Operation Warm, which collects new coats for kids who need them. The race, held at Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, was the first of its kind on the property.
McGillivray is the founder of Dave McGillivray Sports Enterprises, a company that provides a full range of event and race production, management and consulting services. He said Dick Sanford, founder of Operation Warm, contacted him to handle the logistics of the race.
The event, he said, “went off without a hitch. Everyone at Winterthur was very hospitable.”
McGillivray says 1,600 people signed up for the inaugural race, which he hopes to make an annual event.
But for now, his focus is shifting back to the Boston Marathon, held every April. This will be his 30th year directing the race—but even more impressive, the 62-year-old has run it 44 years in a row.
“30,000 people are registered to run the Boston Marathon and registration filled up within a matter of weeks,” he says.
