Celine Cummings is more than just a nail technician. She is a true artist. No nail design is too abstract or complex for Cummings, who prides herself on 100 percent freehand painting. She has created cable knit sweater patterns, Disney characters and a slew of holiday themes, just to name a few. Cummings’ talent has resulted in contributing nail tutorials for Nail It! Magazine and a column for Nail Pro magazine, as well as winning the 2015 Scratch Shoot Out Competition. A junior geology major at the University of Delaware, she balances her studies with her flourishing freelance work, nailedbyceline, and her job as a nail technician at Angel Nails.
Types of services: At Angel Nails in Middletown, Cummings provides manicures and pedicures in both regular polish and gel polish, as well as design work. Her designs for Angel Nails are simpler than her freelance designs (nailedbyceline). Her Angel clients typically request designs only on their ring fingers. Many of Cummings’ freelance clients want designs on all 10 digits.
Nail designs: “The types of designs depend on the time of year and whether there’s a big holiday coming up or an event such as a high school prom,” Cummings says. “For prom I’ll draw inspiration from the client’s dress to create a unique design that complements the outfit (e.g., color scheme, texture and pattern). For Halloween, I’ll get requests for sugar skulls and spider webs, while for Valentine’s Day I’ll paint a teddy bear or bouquet of roses.”
Spring nail trends: Playing off 2016’s dual Pantone colors (Rose Quartz and Serenity), Celine sees her spring designs incorporating an ombre fade from rosy pink to lavender to cool pastel blue. She also anticipates more requests for her subtle 3D designs.
Neutral nail design for everyday: “I really like a French ombre. The white at the tip fades into a beige-tan color toward the cuticle. It’s a classy, less severe version of French. You can also pair it with some simple white lace designs or a few Swarovski crystals for beautiful, but subtle nails.”
Nail care tips: Leave removal of acryclic and gel finishes to the professionals. Attempting to remove them yourself heightens the risk of nail damage, Cummings warns. To make your nail designs last longer, add a clear topcoat a few days after initial application.
