Style Spy: Winter Coats

Remain stylish while braving the cold.

Baby, it’s cold outside. As temps drop and snowflakes fall, stay warm and fashionable this winter with a coat from Ann Taylor.

Silhouettes: “There’s versatility in the styles that are trending, with a lot of options to choose from, but the season is really all about the statement coat,” says Ann Taylor style expert Emily Evans. “Some of the top silhouettes we will see include blazers, trenches, military style coats, oversized coats and capes.” Also expect to see classic silhouettes with a twist like the funnel neck coat ($258), a spin on the classic pea coat. Ann Taylor’s boucle ($248) and wrap-tie coats ($198) both play up the casual cardigan style with heavier fabrics such as nylon fur and wool.

Mixed color palette: No need to choose: Bold and neutral colors are both in. “This winter’s neutral color trends are tan, winter white, beige and pale pink, but we will see bold pops of color, too, especially bright reds and blues,” Evans says. “And a classic black coat never goes out of style.”

Prints and fabrics: The ’70s influence carries over from fall into winter. Plaid prints (Plaid Brushed Coat, $198) will be trending. And solids will also be making an impact this season. Winter staples such as wool (Double Face Wool Coat, $258) and tweed will be prominent, as will faux fur. Ann Taylor’s winter collection offers faux fur coats in beige, black and inky blue.

Faux fur: For first-timers, Evans recommends easing into the look. Start with a neutral color (Faux Fox Long Coat, $258) instead of a colored version. Another option: Choose a coat that has faux fur accents (Faux Fur Collar Coat, $258), or add faux fur accessories like a stole, scarf or clutch.

Tips: Every woman should have a tailored blazer (Double Breasted Jacket, $179). Evans suggests wearing it to dress up jeans or over a dress. “Long jackets work well with any style and length of dress, from the midi to the mini. And they also give you extra coverage for your legs on cooler days,” she says. For a great everyday work jacket, Evans recommends a trench, an iconic piece that never goes out of style. Bonus: It’s a great transition coat into evening.
