Let’s get ready for summer sunshine, outdoor hikes and adventures for Delaware’s youth with an open house on March 8.

New Castle County has announced its summer camp plans and wants to get the word out to parents about all of the opportunities.

The open house will be held Tuesday, March 8, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Gilliam Building at 77 Reeds Way, New Castle.

“We are really excited about summer camps this year because we have added several new locations and lots of fun camps,” says Carey Lockman Corbin, manager of media and marketing for New Castle County’s Division of Community Resources.

At The Art Studio locations in Wilmington and at Glasgow Park in Newark, kids can expand their abilities by learning to paint, draw and create pottery. This year’s Fantasy Art Camp allows participants to build their own wand, create clay mushroom creates and even develop magical potion jars.

New this year: Camps at Whitehall in Middletown. Whitehall is a large, planned community where summer camp participants will be able to use the downtown area and recreation fields. They will also be able to swim. And, for the littlest participants, Safety Camp will be held here. Safety Camp is a longtime favorite that teaches 4- to 6-year-olds how to cross the street, pay attention to surroundings and how to call 911, among other skills.

“There is so much to do this summer and I think everyone is most excited that field trips are back,” says Corbin.

She recommends coming to the open house and registering while there. The new camp director, Annalie Mergenthaler, will be available to answer questions.

Parents can also start the process of applying for financial aid at the open house. While there are a limited number of aid packages, Corbin encourages everyone to apply if they are concerned about paying.

This summer could be a great summer for your child to try a new sport at one of the sports camps. Or to spend the day with new friends at another new location, the Route 9 Library and Innovation Center, where participants get to spend time participating in STEM activities.

“There’s really something for everyone,” Corbin says.
