The 2018 Ultimate Guide to Delaware: A Letter from Gov. John Carney

A reflection on some of the First State’s best features.

Down picturesque country roads, around winding river bends and along meandering shorelines, Delaware is teeming with endless discoveries.

You’ll make those discoveries in the beauty of paddling through the baldcypress trees in Trap Pond State Park. You’ll hear them in a new band jamming at the Firefly Music Festival. You’ll learn about them in fascinating tales that fill the First State National Historical Park. And you’ll taste them at the many breweries, wineries and distilleries that are part of the Delaware Beer, Wine & Spirits Trail.

From north to south, each of the state’s regions offers unique experiences.

In northern Delaware, you can marvel at the grandeur of yesteryear when you visit the four majestic du Pont mansions open to the public. Or spend an exciting day in Wilmington with mini-golf and baseball on the riverfront, incredible restaurants all over and abounding arts options, including mesmerizing museums and major music and theater acts at The Grand Opera House, the Queen or The Playhouse on Rodney Square.

Head south and you’ll find the country flair of central Delaware. Hop on your bicycle to pedal through the unspoiled beauty of Amish country. Gaze skyward to experience the majesty of migration at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Or explore a different kind of airborne intrigue by climbing into the historic aircraft of the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover Air Force Base.

In southern Delaware enjoy the state’s award-winning beaches. Each has its own style, from iconic Rehoboth Beach (consistently ranked one of America’s top family getaways) to energetic Dewey Beach to family-friendly Bethany Beach. Every day can bring a new treasured moment—eating sauce-swirled slices of Grotto pizza, delighting in cross-generational play at Funland or making a tax-free buy in a delightful downtown or at the Tanger Outlets.

With so much to offer, any time of year is a great time to discover Delaware. And some of the region’s best festivals and events can make a day, a weekend or longer unforgettable, from fall’s offbeat Sea Witch Festival to spring’s colorful Wildflower Celebration. And no matter the season, you can always see what is going on every day across the state by downloading the mobile application GeoSwap.
