Central and southern Delaware’s largest healthcare system, Bayhealth has more than 55 locations including two hospitals—Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus and Bayhealth Milford Memorial—employed physician practices, outpatient diagnostic centers, high school wellness centers, the Ambulatory Surgical Center, occupational health centers and the Bayhealth Emergency Center, Smyrna. Bayhealth is staffed by more than 3,600 employees and 400 physicians. It is an affiliate of Penn Medicine for Heart and Vascular, Cancer and Orthopaedics.
In 2015, Bayhealth earned the prestigious Magnet designation in recognition of nursing excellence. Bayhealth is part of the Magnet community—a select group of 410 out of nearly 6,000 healthcare organizations. Magnet designation honors healthcare organizations for nursing professionalism, teamwork, quality patient care and innovations in nursing practice.
In 2017, Bayhealth Milford Memorial earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers. The Gold Seal of Approval and the Heart-Check mark represent symbols of quality from their respective organizations. Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus was also re-designated as a Primary Stroke Center.
In recent years Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus opened a 35,000-square-foot integrated cancer center and a new Emergency Department with 39 treatment bays. In 2015, a 32-bed intermediate care unit, known as the Progressive Care Unit, with all private rooms opened. The PCU also includes four rooms that can accommodate bariatric patients.
In 2019, Bayhealth will open an innovative new health campus in southern Delaware to serve the growing needs of the community. The Bayhealth Sussex Campus will include a 440,000-square-foot hospital and outpatient center designed with the vision of providing comprehensive healthcare for the next 100 years and beyond, throughout each stage of life—all in one easily accessible location. The Bayhealth Sussex Campus includes an agreement with Nemours Children’s Health System to bring enhanced pediatric and senior care to southern Delaware. The medical center in Lewes is a 210-bed, licensed, not-for-profit community hospital. Beebe’s specialized services include cardiac and vascular, oncology, women’s health and orthopedics.
Beebe Healthcare offers multiple health evaluations and educational events each year, including cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and other free and reduced-cost screenings.
Beebe is a Healthgrades Five-Star Recipient for total knee replacement for 13 years in a row and a Five-Star Recipient for spinal fusion surgery for seven years in a row. It has been the recipient of the Healthgrades Orthopaedic Surgery Excellence Award for 10 years in a row (2007-2016) and is a Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Heart Failure in 2016.
In 2014, Beebe was the first hospital in Delaware to be designated baby-friendly by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund.
Beebe’s outpatient services include walk-in care, lab express, diagnostic imaging and physical rehabilitation services with convenient locations throughout Sussex County. The Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes is the only hospital-based school in the state and includes state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment and high fidelity simulation labs.
In 2016, Beebe Healthcare celebrated its 100th anniversary with programs and events in Sussex County throughout the year.
Looking ahead, Beebe Healthcare plans to embark upon a comprehensive expansion of the system over the next several years. This expansion will include new facilities and new services on three campuses as Beebe Healthcare works to meet the needs of the growing region. Construction on the first phase of the expansion is expected to begin as early as fall of this year.

Christiana Care Health System, headquartered in Wilmington, is one of the country’s largest healthcare providers, ranking 22nd in the nation for hospital admissions.
Christiana Care is a major teaching hospital with two campuses and more than 250 Medical-Dental residents and fellows.
Christiana Care is recognized as a regional center for excellence in cardiology, cancer and women’s health services. The system is home to Delaware’s only Level I trauma center, the only center of its kind between Philadelphia and Baltimore. Christiana Care also features a Level III neonatal intensive care unit, the only delivering hospital in the state to offer this level of care for newborns.

Nanticoke Memorial Hospital holds a Level III trauma center certification and is the only hospital on the Delmarva Peninsula to receive a four-star rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Nanticoke is nationally certified by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center and is a Gold Plus Award performer according to the American Heart/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines program. Nanticoke’s Cancer Care Services holds Accreditation with Commendation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and is a member of the Association of Community Cancer Centers.
Nanticoke’s medical staff includes over 155 active and community affiliate healthcare providers practicing in 40 different specialties.
The Nanticoke Physician Network includes a group of more than 50 employed physicians and healthcare providers. Office locations can be found in Seaford, Laurel, Bridgeville and Georgetown, as well as in Federalsburg and Hurlock, Maryland. Located on 300 acres just outside of Wilmington, the 200-bed Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children offers a tranquil setting in which to heal. What began in 1940 as a pediatric orthopedic institute is now a world-renowned full-service children’s hospital.
The hospital’s 450,000-square-foot expansion (completed in 2014) was designed by families for families. The thoughts and ideas of children, parents and caregivers helped inspire the design—an environment to promote children’s physical, emotional and spiritual healing.

Wilmington VA Medical Center

President Harry S. Truman approved the establishment of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wilmington in 1946. Construction was completed in 1950, making the Wilmington VAMC the ninth VA hospital to open after World War II.
The Wilmington VAMC is a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 2 facility servicing Delaware and southern New Jersey. It is a teaching medical center providing a full range of patient care services. Comprehensive healthcare is provided through primary and long-term care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, MRI, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, hospice and extended care.
The medical center is located in Wilmington, Delaware and has outpatient clinics in Cumberland, Atlantic, and Cape May counties in New Jersey as well as Kent and Sussex counties in Delaware. The medical center also operates a Mobile Health Clinic.
The Wilmington VAMC campus consists of the medical center, a Community Living Center and a Veterans Benefits Administration facility. Wilmington VAMC is a part of VISN 4, which includes eight other facilities: Philadelphia, Coatesville, Lebanon, Wilkes-Barre, Altoona, Butler, Erie, and Pittsburgh—all in Pennsylvania.
To address the changing Veteran population, medical advances and changes in treatment modalities, Wilmington VA has made significant alterations in the way care is provided. Initially supporting 5000 outpatient visits a year in addition to its 336 inpatient beds, the medical center now operates 16 acute inpatient beds, six ICU beds and 40 nursing home beds. The medical center and its five associated community based outpatient clinics provided health care to more than 30,000 registered veterans in 2017.
Wilmington is proud of its medical affiliations with top medical schools, supporting the VA’s educational mission. Major medical affiliations are maintained with Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Jefferson University provides support for psychiatry, urology, and internal medicine programs. Wilmington VAMC provides training for Arcadia University PA students. Students from other schools receive training at the medical center including VA Optometry, and Temple University Ophthalmology. Allied affiliations support programs in nursing, dental technology, dietetics, social work and pharmacy. The medical center formally entered into an affiliation agreement with the University of Delaware school of Physical Therapy to provide academic research and clinical support for Veterans.
