Sugar Daddy Dana Herbert hits the sand for the Polar Bear cake-off, deals come to the Riverfront and a German invasion in Wilmington.

Tuesday, February 1: Gray skies and frigid temperatures can make you forget all about waterfront dining. But the good folks at the Riverfront Development Corporation have launched a month-long program to remind you that there are some great dining options on the banks of the Christina.

RiverFeast, which commences tomorrow, rewards diners with a $20 voucher when they spend $50 or more at participating restaurants. Those include: Big Fish Grill, FireStone Roasting House, Iron Hill Brewery, Harry’s Seafood Grill, and Timothy’s.

“We thought we would try something creative this winter to encourage people to visit the magnificent restaurants we have along the Wilmington Riverfront,” said Megan McGlinchey, director of operations at the RDC, which is spearheading the promotion. “Since the Riverfront is most often associated with dining out in the summer, sometimes people don’t think of these restaurants first when they are choosing a place to eat out in the colder months.”

The RiverFeast deal is available during lunch and dinner on Monday through Thursday, and vouchers may be redeemed Sunday through Thursday anytime between March 1 and April 21.

Thursday, February 3-Saturday, February 5: Guests dining at the French-leaning Wilmington classic the Green Room are in for a Bavarian treat this week, as card-carrying Master Chef Wolfgang Vomend will be a guest chef at Hotel du Pont. And the man behind the Bavarian Inn and Lodge in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, hopes to unleash some traditional German food on Green Room patrons.

Some basic Googling reveals the German-born chef is one of only 72 Master Chefs in the country, is the former executive chef at Safir Hotels in Egypt and his Bavarian Inn and Lodge has earned a Four-Diamond rating from AAA.

Saturday, February 5: There’s no better way to celebrate an anniversary than with cake (as has been proven). And so, for its big 20th anniversary, the Lewes Polar Bear Plunge is going big in the cake department.

The Polar Bear Cake-Off, which goes down Saturday afternoon, pits six contestants from  TLC’s “Cake Boss – Next Great Baker” against one another, including the show’s winner, Delaware’s own Dana Herbert. The bakers will split into two teams to see which can create the best Polar Bear Cake.

Unlike the Plunge itself, the Cake-Off is (mercifully) indoors, at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center from 9 a.m. until judgment at 3 p.m. Admission is free, and spectators can vote for their favorite cake with a $1 donation toward Special Olympics. A few local food experts (including yours truly) will weigh in, too.

On Sunday, both cakes will be on display on the boardwalk at the Plunge from 10 a.m. til noon, after which slices will be available to taste for just a $1 donation.

The event will give Delawareans a close-up look at some outstanding bakers from around the country, including Herbert, the man behind  Desserts by Dana in New Castle, who won $50,000 and a new car as the winner of “Next Great Baker.”
