Beginning in 2015, tourists and residents regularly rolled up to Epworth United Methodist Church for Food Truck Fridays, a fundraiser for the church and a feast for foodies. Regularly scheduled events stopped in 2018, but fans of the event have a chance to relive those glory days on Saturday, April 27, when a convoy of food trucks will gather in the church parking lot from noon-6 p.m.
The event is part of Epworth’s Earth Day Weekend festivities on April 27-28. On Saturday morning, participants have the option to get outdoors and try spring gardening, or join a team to help clean up Holland Glade Road—which runs in front of the church.
Participating food truck vendors include Delicious Craving, The Polish Connection, The Corn Exchange—which specializes in fresh roasted corn—Hot Dogs at the Beach, Gettapizzathis, Fat Vinnie’s, Fresh Cart, Tre Sorelle Dolce (ice cream and water ice) and The Suburban Farmhouse. Epworth is near the entrance to the Junction and Breakwater Trail, so there is also the option to work off a few of those calories after eating.
On Sunday from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., the church will feature indoor displays and exhibitors focused on weaning consumers off plastics. “We will not only show people what not to use, but we’ll show people what they can use instead,” says Janet Taylor-Smith, manager of the Epworth’s green team. “There are so many alternatives.”
Gail Gingrich will demonstrate how to make reusable tote bags out of animal feed bags. If you don’t want to do it yourself, choose from one of the 100 readymade bags for sale. Jennifer Biddle, associate professor at the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Envoirnment, will be a guest speaker.
The event is also partnering with the siblings behind Blume’s Balloon Round Up, an anti-littering initiative. Joshua, 12, and Emily, 10, have run contests between boaters and beachcombers to see who can bag the most balloons.
“We’re showcasing that children that do their part,” Taylor-Smith says. “After all, it’s their world that we’re leaving them.”
