Halloween is a fast-fashion frenzy, with hoards of shoppers purchasing synthetic fabrics and costume pieces they’ll likely throw out after one wear. DIY and thrifted Halloween costumes have long been the norm for those trying to save a few dollars. But now, with growing awareness of the pollution and corruption often present in the fast-fashion industry, there are more reasons than ever to steer clear of corporate costume shops.
Local stylist and thrifting expert Tia Jones (Tia Couture) knows that “thrifty” doesn’t have to mean “cheap.” Her guided thrifting sessions teach her fashion-forward clients how to shop efficiently, score great deals and turn pre-loved pieces into statement outfits. All the concepts Jones shares with her clients can also be used to create a great thrifted Halloween costume.
Here, Jones shares her top five tips for anyone who wants to thrift a fashionable costume this Halloween season.

1. Plan ahead and start early.
It’s no secret that thrifting can be a toss-up. Some days, you leave with a full cart of impressive labels and great deals, and some days you come up empty. When it comes to planning the perfect DIY Halloween costume, Jones recommends starting early so you can make multiple trips if necessary.
2. Bring inspo pics.
Thrifting is like a treasure hunt. It’s easy to get lost in the racks and lose focus. Having a few photos to reference for inspiration can help keep you on task so the desired look is at the front of your mind. Plus, collecting the photos beforehand is great research to get the inspiration flowing before you head to the thrift store.
3. Try multiple thrift stores.
As they say, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” Jones recommends starting early so you can try out multiple thrift stores on multiple different days. “Sometimes, you just don’t find anything,” she says. The trips to two or three stores will feel worth it once you find the perfect costume piece at a great price.
4. Inspect items for stains/flaws.
This is an important one! Often, pieces are donated to thrift stores because of a minor stain or flaw. If you’re planning on wearing an item once for a costume and the flaw is easily covered, it may not be a big deal. But it’s best to check thoroughly so you know what you’re working with.
5. Be creative and have fun!
“Sometimes, you have to think outside the box,” Jones explains. You’re not always going to find the perfect piece when you thrift a Halloween costume, but if you get creative with it, you can often make something work. You may have to get a bit creative and be willing to take a pair of sheers or some fabric dye to a garment to get the perfect outcome. Once you’ve found some base pieces at the thrift store, there’s nothing wrong with heading to your local costume shop to finish up the look.
