Labor Day weekend starts the unofficial transition into the fall season. As we welcome the arrival of autumn, we also adapt to Delaware’s unpredictable seasonal weather. With cooler temperatures in the morning and warm afternoons, transitional pieces are must-haves for this time of year.

That being said, clothing that is trendy and works for both warmer and cooler temperatures can be difficult to find. We turned to Carey Pauley, the owner of The Pink Turtle Boutique in Rehoboth Beach, for tips on transitional fall style.

Layering 101

According to Pauley, basic cardigans and blazers are a must for this season. With temperatures changing throughout the day, stylish layering is the key to transitional fall style.

Our Picks
Vintage Printed Cardigan | $49 | Urban Outfitters
Cropped Blazer | $148 | Anthropologie

Transitional Trends

“The trends are prominent this end of summer/early fall,” says Pauley. “We are seeing a lot of the old money trend, just a little more feminine.” This means classic pieces in neutral colors. While spring and summer were all about funky patterns and vibrant colors, fall style is trending more toned-down. The old money aesthetic is all about quiet luxury. (P.S. Our Picks:
Walter Baker Alfie Tweed Jacket | $298 | Anthropologie
ASTR The Label Bronwyn Pleated Skort | $119 | Anthropologie

A Pop of Crimson

“We are still seeing red in everything from tops to bottoms to shoes,” Pauley observes. “Red is a great pop of color to a fall wardrobe that typically consists off black, gray and neutrals.” While you may gravitate toward safe neutrals for coats, a red jacket can add a bold flash of color to any transitional fall style.

Our Picks:
Kira Harness Boots in red | $328 | Free People
Dyed Denim Trench Coat | $89.97 | Lane Bryant

Dress up, Dress Down

Mixed-material dresses are a great basic to keep in your closet for the fall season. “Dresses that have a sweater top and poplin bottom are great transition pieces from summer to fall,” Pauley advises. A stylish mixed-media dress can be dressed up or down by changing elements like jewelry, shoes, scarves, bags and hats.

Our Picks:
Moon River Mixed Media Long Sleeve Midi Dress | $98 | Nordstrom
Mix Media Tweed Mini Dress | $140 | English Factory
Mix Media Button Pointed Dress | $130 | English Factory
