The scoop: Stay in the beautifully restored 18th-century mansion or a private cottage. Your lodging is located adjacent to the Wolf Sanctuary of PA (717-626-4617, www.wolfsanctuarypa.org), and you can take an hour-long guided daytime tour on Saturday or Sunday ($12) or make a reservation for a Tuesday or Thursday visit ($15). For a special experience, book a nighttime Full Moon Tour ($20), available once a month. BYO hot dogs or marshmallows for the bonfire.

Skyland Resort

The scoop: The resort is located at the highest point on the famously scenic Skyline Drive in the mountains of
Shenandoah National Park. There are no frills (or phones), but the natural surroundings are peaceful and breathtaking. 

Cost: Rates start at $127. Guided hiking packages, including one night’s lodging, from $260 mid-week.

Drive time: 3 hours, 45 minutes, from Main Line; 3 hours, 30 minutes, from Wilmington.
