With our packed schedules and busy lives, we often forget to express thanks to those who help us and serve our communities. This Memorial Day, Wilmington Rotary will offer the opportunity to honor our heroes in a unique and memorable way.
Every year, communities across the country participate in Flags for Vets, which aims to honor United States military veterans by planting large groups of flags in public places. Each flag represents an individual.
Wilmington Rotary is expanding the program by looking outside the military. Its Flags for Heroes will honor “teachers, vets, somebody in the service, EMS response—whoever your personal hero is,” says Jerry Bilton, who brought the idea to Wilmington. “The objective is to make special recognition for the personal heroes of our lives.”
Residents register their personal hero through an online form, with a $50 donation to Wilmington Rotary. Heroes will be honored with their own American flag, and their names will be published in local newspapers. Wilmington Rotary plans to display the flags in Rodney Square, Centennial Park and H. Fletcher Brown Park. Proceeds will help the club fund its community service.
“I saw some videos on TV of a helicopter flying over these flag sights, and I thought, Wow, that’s really sensational.” says Kai Lassen, president of Wilmington Rotary.
