There was a time when “the” town doctor was commonplace.  Whether you had a cold, were experiencing chest pain or had a minor injury, you went to see the same doctor. That doctor read thick medical books, learned their craft in school from mentors during apprenticeships and received one medical journal to stay on top of the latest developments. 

Over time, as medical knowledge expanded at an ever-increasing rate, specialty societies were created. Each one focused on different facets within the field of medicine or surgery. One of these specialized in orthopaedic care, The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, which was founded in 1933. 

There was also a time when “the” town orthopaedic surgeon was customary. Whether you had a sore shoulder, a broken ankle, carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis, you went to see the same surgeon. Eventually within the field of orthopaedics, knowledge and experience greatly expanded, and sub-specialty societies sprang up in an effort to further improve care. Societies for the hand, sports medicine, hip and knee replacement, foot and ankle, shoulder and elbow, trauma and spine were created. Now, there is additional training—called a fellowship—in each of these sub-specialties.

Information is now shared globally with the stroke of a computer key or the swipe of a touchscreen. Medicine and surgery have become incredibly sophisticated and intricate. A century ago, it was conceivable that one person could reasonably understand most of the known medical facts for practical medical care. Today, that is simply impossible.
