Q&A Topic: Custom Pool Design with Ashton Pools by Design

At Ashton Pools by Design, their experts are all about outdoor living with “a beautiful space you can enjoy outside the home.” Imagine preparing dinner with the family around the outdoor pizza oven, sipping wine or tea by the firepit—and long, leisurely swims in a bespoke swimming pool, created for you and your family’s specific needs. Here, Ashton’s pool designers explain why custom is the best fit for fun in your own backyard.

Why go with custom pool design?

At Ashton Pools by Design, we believe that spending more time up front doing our due diligence will result in a more organized and on-track build and overall better experience for our clients. First, we gather information from the client and explain our process. From there, we meet either in person or on Zoom to go over the client’s wants and needs—until the design absolutely perfect. Once we nail down the design, we go through the proposal, line by line, to make sure the client knows what they are getting. Occasionally, we may need engineered drawings or soil testing or other items to make sure we have all the information we can have.

What is custom building?

One of the biggest differences between a custom builder and somebody who is not is the process a custom builder goes through learning all about the client you and the client’s wish list and needs. When we have the opportunity to meet with clients, we do a lot more listening and let them talk. We want to learn all about them, how they currently use the space, how they think they want to use the space, who in the home are we designing for and so much more. By taking more time up front to understand their needs and to put a custom design together for them, we can ensure that their investment is going to encompass every issue they had and come up with a solution that is not only beautiful but really works perfectly for them.

What is the cost for a custom pool?

We have a starting cost, but every pool is different based on the factors that go into creating it. For instance, building an in-ground pool on a perfectly flat yard is easier and less expensive than a pool that has to be built into a hill or sloped yard, or in an upper deck. We also need to learn more about any amenities a client wants, such as a tanning ledge, water features, heater or a UV/Ozone water system. All of these factors must be taken into consideration when determining the price—that’s why we need to ask questions before we can give our client’s a quote.

How long is Delaware’s typical pool season?

Delaware has historically had a 5-month pool season, which typically is May through September. With the amazing advances in pool heaters, we are seeing clients opening their pools in early- to mid-April, and we have clients who are swimming almost all the way up until Thanksgiving. In the dead of summer, without any tree coverage overhead, we have clients installing and using pool chillers to cool their pool down. We always spend time chatting with our clients about how they think they are going to use their pool, and what their home and lot look like, so we can guide them to the amenities that are best for them.
