If you are ready to do something about your thinning hair, you may have read about medicinal options or the traditional method of transplanting hair follicles known as ‘strip extraction.’ Though these methods don’t work for everyone—and strip extractions cause horizontal scarring at the back of the head and the transplanted hair ‘plugs’ are often visible—both have been used to try to restore hair to balding or thinning scalps.
But now, there’s NeoGrafting, a much more natural-looking and completely safe method of hair restoration that leaves no scars, can be completed in as little as five hours, and works for both men and women. This state-of-the-art procedure is available at MagnifaSkin MedSpa in New Castle County.
“The NeoGraft Hair Transplant technique is relatively new and has gained in popularity in the last several years,” says Tony Cucuzzella, M.D., co-owner of MagnifaSkin MedSpa. “Although it’s a new offering in our practice, the NeoGraft technicians who perform the procedure have been doing it for 10 to 15 years.”
How Does NeoGraft Work and Are You A Good Candidate?
During your initial consultation, Dr. Cucuzzella will determine if NeoGraft Hair Transplants are appropriate. “Not everyone is a good candidate,” he says. “It’s not measured by how much hair loss has occurred but by how much hair is available to transplant. Hair follicles come from a donor site at the back of the head, where hair is most richly dense. You need to extract and transplant between 1,500 and 2,000 follicles—and someone who is fairly bald may not have enough follicles to harvest.”
He says about 15% of the hair at a donor site can be harvested without a change in your appearance. “More than that, you will have a moth-eaten appearance which defeats the purpose of achieving a natural look.”
Once approved for the NeoGraft procedure, Dr. Cucuzzella determines where to place the grafts so they look genuine, and they are transplanted, one-by-one. “There’s an art to drawing a hairline. A little irregularity gives a more natural look. I point out to the NeoGraft technicians where to harvest hair follicles, and where the implants will go.”
“This is really exciting technology,” Dr. Cucuzzella says. “The NeoGraft Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) device has a miniature circular blade that quickly makes an incision around each hair follicle. Each extracted follicular unit normally contains one to three hairs, and they are transplanted into a slit made for the implant. About 94% of grafts take, and will be there indefinitely.”
All In A Day’s Work
The technicians who perform hair transplants at MagnifaSkin MedSpa are NeoGraft Certified and accredited, and the process takes about five or six hours. Once Dr. Cucuzzella anesthetizes the scalp, harvesting is done from 9-11 a.m. Clients take a break for about an hour, and then implants are done from 12-2 p.m. Things wrap up by 3 p.m. and follow-up appointments are scheduled for two or three days later, and then at three, six and nine month intervals. By six months, significant growth has normally occurred.
Discomfort is minimal—usually about 2 on a scale of 10 due to some soreness the next day—and there is no pain during the extraction and transplanting process with local anesthetization. You’re able to listen to music, watch a movie, talk with those around you, and some clients even fall asleep during the treatment. Many people resume their normal routine within a couple of days after the procedure.
Men and Women Benefit From NeoGraft Hair Transplants
If you are losing your hair, you are in good company. By the age of 35, about two-thirds of men have measurable loss and by age 50, 85 percent have visibly thinning hair. And, though it’s not discussed as openly, 40 percent of women experience visible hair loss by the age of 40.
Though most hair follicle transplants are done on men, the number of women seeking NeoGraft transplants is increasing. “The procedure is seamless with women because, since all extractions are done beneath the hair in the back of the head, no one can see any difference at all,” Dr. Cucuzzella says.
Women are getting NeoGraft Hair Transplants for their eyebrows too, and the process is the same with one difference. “Hair is extracted from the sides of the scalp, behind the ear, because these softer hairs are more similar to eyebrow hairs,” he says. “NeoGraft Hair Restoration for eyebrows is becoming more popular for women who are aging and experiencing thinning eyebrow hair, and it’s very fashionable for younger women too.”
