What are cosmetic dental veneers?

The veneers are pieces of porcelain that cover the face of a tooth. They are a conservative means of changing the color of the teeth, fixing small fractures, improving spacing or addressing general aesthetics. If somebody’s front teeth are really dark from taking tetracycline as a child and you can’t bleach them, you might be able to cover them over with porcelain veneers.

Am I a candidate?

That would be determined during a consultation visit. We have to see the tooth or teeth to determine whether a veneer is appropriate, or another form of repair, like a crown, is necessary.

If veneers are right for me, what is the process of getting those veneers?

The process of preparing your teeth for the veneers and delivering them is a two-step process. During the first visit, we will prepare your tooth or teeth for the veneers. This usually involves the removal of a very thin layer of your existing tooth or teeth. An impression of the tooth or teeth that need veneers will be taken and that will provide us with a model of the part of the mouth. A dental laboratory will actually fabricate the porcelain veneers and the models of your existing teeth, along with wax carvings of the new veneers. At that first visit, we will make you a temporary veneer that will give you a chance to “test-drive” it to see what it’s going to look like. We then send the model of your mouth/teeth to the laboratory and they will fabricate the permanent veneers out of porcelain. At the second visit, approximately two weeks later, we apply the permanent veneer or veneers.

How long are the office visits?

The first visit can take from one hour up to several hours, depending on the number of teeth that are being prepared. The second visit is, generally, much briefer as the porcelain veneers need only to be applied to the prepared tooth or teeth.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers may last for many, many years, just as crowns and fillings do. Porcelain veneers are very strong and can last 20, 30 or even 40 years.

How much do veneers cost, and what payment options do I have?

A single veneer costs $1,400. We accept all forms of insurance, credit cards and we offer a variety of payment plans.
