To celebrate the rich and diverse Latin American culture and the final weeks of the exhibition “Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art,” the Delaware Art Museum will present Noche de Carnaval on April 29, an after-hours carnival that will feature performances by internationally known artists DJ Soul Buck, INTIKANA, DJ Perly, Orquesta Salsabor From Delaware and special guest artists. Rolling Revolution Food trucks will be onsite and feature Latin American-inspired cuisine, including Koi on the Go, the Brunch Box, Maiale Deli and Salumeria, and Mojo Loco. Guests will also enjoy cash bars featuring special cocktails and drinks. Family-friendly activities, including mask making, will be available for young visitors.
Intikana is an artist, educator and filmmaker. He has been featured on VH1 and toured across the United States, Canada, Latin America, Tanzania and Uganda while sharing the stage with artists such as KRS-One, Immortal Technique, Jay Electronica, Raekwon, Afrika Bambaataa, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, The Last Poets, Dead Prez, and more. Intikana is also the recipient of The Bronx Council On The Arts’ BRIO (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) award for Excellence in Performing Arts. He has worked with community organizations to provide innovative educational opportunities for youth through hip hop and social/cultural awareness. His critically acclaimed one-man show “Penumbra” was selected by HBO to be presented as a film pitch for the 2009 NY International Latino Film Festival. It toured nationally.
DJ Perly is a Puerto-Rican Russian DJ who plays hip hop, breaks andhouse music, and practices the art of turntablism with a passion. She has competed in The NYC DMC DJ Battles and is currently a 3x Freestyle Mondays DJ Battle Champion. DJ Perly is also a member of the first Latino rocking crew, The Bronx Boys/Bronx Girls Rocking Crew, and works with local artists who share the same love and passion for all things music.
DJ Soul Buck, aka Mr. Street Sickness, spins at various locations in Philadelphia, including the Trocadero, The Khyber, and many more. He has taken his talents around the United States and recently Canada as a tour DJ for Digable Planets. Visitors will be entertained when listening to DJ Soul Buck’s love for craft on the 1s and 2s. He will be playing Latin American-infused tunes you can dance to during Noche de Carnaval.
Orquesta Salsabor is a Latin salsa band from Wilmington and represents the pride of Latin people in the city. What originally started as a family band has expanded to unite musicians and singers from the Delaware Valley and Philadelphia area. Orquesta Salsabor will play salsa hits of Tito Nieves, Frankie Ruiz, Luis Enrique, Victor Manuel, Marc Anthony and many others.
“Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art” will be on view until May 29. Organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the exhibition presents the rich and varied contributions of Latino artists in the United States since the mid-20th century. “Our America” showcases the rich diversity of Latino communities in the United States and features artists of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban and Dominican descent, as well as other Latin American groups with deep roots in the United States. It explores how Latino artists shaped the artistic movements of their day and recalibrated key themes in American art and culture. The exhibition presents works in all media by more than 70 leading modern and contemporary artists.
