After Firefly, Five Ways to Extend the Fun

Take advantage of some more state treasures.

When Sunday night’s final act, Major Lazer, unplugs its gear early Monday morning, the 2016 Firefly Festival will come to a close. But the party doesn’t have to end there.

Here are five ways to keep rocking in southern Delaware in the days that follow Firefly. For more ways to plan your trip, check out Visit Delaware.

Grab a beer

Tiny Delaware is home to some serious hops, and sits near the top of the nation in terms of per-capita craft beer production, consumption and economic impact, according to the Brewers Association. Take a short drive from Dover Downs to the Fordham & Dominion Brewing Company, Blue Earl Brewing in Smyrna, Mispillion River Brewing in Milford or Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton.

Head to the beach

Just an hour’s drive from Dover are some of America’s most decorated beach resort towns, from family (and foodie) favorite Rehoboth Beach to crazy, clubby Dewey Beach. High-end restaurants and spas, boutique and outlet shopping, and miles of pristine beaches beckon—particularly after a weekend without a proper shower.

Have some monster fun

Stick around near Dover International Speedway for a few days after Firefly to get up close and personal with one of the East Coast’s premier racetracks—known as the Monster Mile. Each Thursday the track hosts behind-the-scenes tours. For just $7, get privileged access to the pit road, victory lane, Miles the Monster and the infield media center. Or upgrade to the NASCAR Racing Experience, and zip around in an actual NASCAR car.

Get Biggs

If Mumford & Sons leaves you feeling a little less than cultured, take a short trip to the Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover for everything from folk art and contemporary works to furniture and silver.

Gamble

Dover Downs Hotel & Casino might’ve been booked solid for Firefly weekend, but after the music ends, come back for live harness racing, daily poker tournaments, live music and comedy (like Tracy Morgan on October 14), keno, slots and table games. A half-hour drive away is Harrington Raceway & Casino, home to 1,800 slot machines, sports betting and more (the Delaware State Fair, which kicks off July 21, is also in Harrington).
