If you can’t get enough of Winterthur’s yearlong “Costumes of Downton Abbey” exhibition, there’s another way to celebrate the acclaimed British drama—an afternoon tea in the estate’s visitor center. Winterthur’s food-service director Ken Warner says the events proved so popular that his team had to switch from traditional tea service to a buffet format to accommodate the demand. The menu includes finger sandwiches like crème-fraîche egg salad on poppy-seed brioche with sweet pea sprouts, cauliflower-Stilton bisque and all manner of miniature scones. Executive chef Gary Coyle also mixes era-specific cuisine with locally influenced dishes, like Henry Francis du Pont’s chocolate mousse tartlets. “People expect scones and lemon curd, but we also present a lot of other items,” Warner says. “People can make it their dinner.” An added bonus: the Winterthur wait staff even dons Downton-inspired maid and butler garb. Mr. Carson would be so proud. There are several tea dates still available until the exhibit concludes in January. Reserve your table at www.winterthur.org.
