Refining the Region
You know Bayard T. Berndt as a Brandywine Valley artist and late owner of Hardcastle Gallery. Now he’s also the subject of a retrospective exhibit at the the Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover. “Refining the Region: the Landscapes of Bayard T. Berndt” opens Nov. 1. “’Refining the Region’ includes more than 70 paintings of local points of beauty,” says curator Ryan Grover. “Scenes from the Brandywine Park, the Wilmington Riverfront, Buckley’s Tavern, and historic Odessa will warm the hearts of all viewers, but especially those familiar with the area.” Berndt studied under such luminary figures as Frank Schoonover, N.C. Wyeth and Gayle Hoskins. “Refining the Region” spans the course of his 60-year career. He was especially enamored with the beauty and heritage of the Brandywine Valley and often focused on his hometown of Wilmington. Some of his most recognizable scenes show commerce on local waterways, industrialization, urban street views and covered bridges. The exhibition runs through Feb. 23. Related activities include the lecture “A Point of Comparison: Paintings and Photographs as Evidence of Change in Industrial and Cultural Landscape” by state archivist Sarah Denison on Nov. 16. The panel discussion “Bayard Berndt as Artist, Instructor and Mentor” happens Jan. 18. Participants include: David Berndt, son of Berndt and author of “Bayard Taylor Berndt: Brandywine Valley Artist”; E. Jean Lanyon, Berndt protégé and former Hardcastle employee; and Charles Allmond, Delaware artist and longtime Hardcastle customer. Ryan Grover, Biggs Museum Curator, will moderate.

Christina Cultural Arts Center has named 14-year-old Pyerce Oates as its first recipient of the Dennis Fortune Scholarship for Musical Excellence. The scholarship was established in 2007 by Alan Levenson and Karen Morris to honor Fortune’s contributions as a teacher and mentor of school-age music students. He released his first CD, “Humble Beginnings,” on G-Records in February 2009 at the age of 9. In 2011, Oates released his second CD, “A Dad Is Like A General,” to pay homage to loving fathers.Oates has received numerous awards, including the Newark Delaware NAACP for Youth Community Service, Outstanding Soloist Award from the University of Delaware’s Jazz Festival in 2011 and 2012, and Outstanding Accompanist by Music in the Parks in Hershey, Pa., in 2011 and 2012.
