Ty Mathis has always loved music. The Newark native took a liking to rock music as a child, listening to artists like Tom Petty and CCR. Fast-forward to today, and Mathis is ready to release a sixth studio album of genre-bending tracks that fuse funk, soul, folk, and rock and roll.

When Mathis was 11, his parents enrolled him in School of Rock. “That was when my musical journey really began,” he says. He quickly took a liking to performing and writing music. Mathis continued to hone his skills through his teen and young adult years, learning the ins and outs of sound engineering, production, and instruments like bass, keys, drums, and guitar. “I wanted to be able to record without relying on other musicians to work with,” he says.
In 2020, Mathis released his first EP titled Change of Weather. In the following years, he’s continued to produce EPs and full-length albums characterized by psychedelic visuals and elements of rock, funk, and soul.
“I consider my genre ‘evolution music,'” Mathis says. “It’s hard for me to confine myself to one genre. One song might sound like rock and the next one might sound like soul. The thing that’s consistent is the evolution.”
In 2025, Mathis is looking forward to a new full-length studio album and a small tour with friends Sug Daniels and Antar Goodwin. Goodwin joins Mathis onstage during live shows on the bass, along with Paul Legerme on drums.

“I’ve always had a revolving door of musicians playing with me. It’s nice to have a consistent band,” Mathis says of Legerme and Goodwin.
Sound and Style
Music isn’t the only medium Mathis uses to unleash his creativity. In the modern music industry, merchandise is a vital part of branding and marketing. Mathis takes it a step further, creating his own clothing line—a project that is inspired by his music, but stands on its own.
“I’m really into fashion, and I have a lot of opinions about fashion,” Mathis says. He creates each of his brightly colored hats, t-shirts, and more by hand. With a bright color palette and plenty of tie-dye, the pieces are fun to mix and match. Mathis is particular about ethically sourced, high-quality garments. He uses only 100% cotton and creates the artwork himself.
“I don’t believe in fast fashion, and I want shirts to last well over 10 years,” he notes.
