Avelo, a new and ultra-low-cost airline, offers flights out of Wilmington Airport, making warm-weather vacations more accessible.

With temperatures on the decline, it’s hard to avoid daydreams of a tropical paradise that’s sunny and lush. It’s clear that we all need a vacation. Now you can satiate your wanderlust without venturing into Philadelphia. Avelo Airlines, an ultra-low-cost airline based in Houston, Texas, has just started offering transportation from the Wilmington Airport (ILG) in Delaware to five palm-dotted locations in Florida: Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and West Palm Beach.

On February 1, Avelo Airlines launched its inaugural flight from ILG with a nonstop flight to Orlando. Snow dusted the cars in the parking lots as passengers with visions of white sands and balmy breezes arrived with their suitcases. A balloon arch crowned the lobby and decorations in Avelo colors bedecked the airport: purple, yellow, white and blue. Goodie bags and even mascots–the Delaware State University Hornet and the University of Delaware Blue Hen–made the event complete. A ribbon-cutting, press release and water salute topped off the day. Cameras flashed and clicked as the press gathered around Andrew Levy, CEO and founder of Avelo.

“I think [the launch] is important because we’re going to offer more choice,” says Levy, who founded the airline in 2021. The founding of Avelo came as a result of a desire to inspire travel, offer lower costs for potential travelers and bring convenience and flexibility to their journeys. Avelo primarily focuses on flying underserved communities throughout the country, with four bases and over 30 destinations. All of Avelo’s flights are nonstop for simplicity, efficiency and fewer lost bags, and there are no fees for changed or canceled itineraries.

“It’s an opportunity to take advantage of this amazing airport we have in Wilmington,” Levy says of the launch. “The convenience that it offers customers, in terms of it being easy to use, small, fast in and fast out, and pairing that with low fare, a good product, nice, friendly people to take care of you on board and reliable operations…I think that’s a winning combination,” he adds.

This new airline has created at least 35 jobs in Wilmington and will serve hundreds of thousands of people at ILG. Levy says, “I’m looking forward to being able to really grow in Wilmington…We think we can really do something great, and make the airport meet its potential. We’ll see where it goes–so far so good!”
